Vendee

Seafood and local delicacies.

In the Vendée, one must experience the brioche and the “Jambon de Vendée,” which is a raw cured ham similar to the distinctive taste of the famous American bacon. This is a must-eat for all Vendée tourists.

However, if one isn’t the adventurous type, there are always the amazing seafood delicacies that Vendée, the perfect seaside country that it is, regularly offers.

Restaurants, the classy and not-so classy ones, serve left and right fish and shellfish. This, all in style! Sardines and sea bass, lobsters and langoustines, mussels, scallops, crabs, cockles, skate, tuna, sole and mackerel are a plenty in the Vendée markets and restaurants.

Enjoy eating meat and have varied tastes?

Another interesting cuisine found in the Vendée mostly served with local gammon is the “mogette.” This Vendée staple food is actually made of tiny white haricot beans grown around Les Brouzils and Le Poire-sur-Vie, customarily cooked slowly for hours for that distinctive “mogette” taste. This is homemade cooking at its finest, ladies and gentlemen, and another dining extravaganza one must not forget to experience in the Vendée.

One could also go for a meal made of the sumptuous meat of a “poulet noir.” The “poulet noir,” mind you, is actually a wild black-feathered chicken, which has taken over the palates of customers in the renowned Selfridge’s Food Hall.

Further, since the Vendée is known as the “duck capital” of France, it is then no wonder that duck gourmets also abound in this quaint country. One has many a choice of the different ways a duck is cooked and served in selected Vendée restaurants. You wouldn’t have enough of these duck specialties only in the Vendée.

Wine, Wine and more wine!

Wine . . . no meal is ample without the perfect wine to gulp down what you just ate. Wine also serves as the ideal partner to a good gourmet food, right? It is a fine end to a wonderful start—of eating famous Vendée specialties anyway.

The Vendée is still the place to be when we speak of first-class wines. This tiny country boasts of regionally produced wines, which accordingly have improved in quality over the years. Proof of which is the Vendée wines’ having been labelled with the prestigious VDQS (Vins Delimite de Qualite Superieure) appellation. It is also on its way to reaching the AOC status or the Appellation d’Origine Controlee, one of the most trusted quality assurance tag in the world of wines.

The Vendée wines are by the way sold under the brand “Fiefs Vendéen.”

Where to dine in The Vendee.

For a truly unforgettable vacation in the Vendée, experience good food that only the Vendée can offer.

Visit and enjoy the sumptuous offerings of the fanciest restaurants in this quaint French village.
